The law
From a kitchen extension to a block of flats, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 set out the paperwork you are expected to have. On domestic jobs the client's duties pass to the contractor, so as the builder it usually falls to you.
Every project
Needed before work starts on site. It sets out your site rules, how you will manage the risks and who is responsible. With more than one contractor, the principal contractor makes sure it is in place.
If you use subcontractors
When more than one contractor works on a project, a health and safety file is required. It records the significant risks anyone working on the building later needs to know about, and every contractor supplies information for it.
Every job
Employers must assess the risks of the work by law. A RAMS is how most principal contractors and clients expect to see it before you start.
Larger projects
If a job lasts more than 30 working days with more than 20 workers on site at once, or goes over 500 person-days, HSE must be notified before work starts.
